COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Women's Service League will host My Girlfriend's Closet sale from March 12–15 to raise funds for scholarships and nonprofits helping local women and children, with donations accepted at select sites until March 1 and a prom dress giveaway planned for the following weekend.  KPQ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • WSU debuted its new hybrid apple Sunflare at a tasting event on its Pullman campus, marking its first release since Cosmic Crisp. The tart, crunchy apple — a cross of Honeycrisp and Pink Lady — will hit local grocery stores after the 2029 harvest.  KPQ
  • Washington schools are rethinking enrollment strategies as K-12 student numbers fall amid lower birthrates (and rising homeschooling numbers), state data shows. Some districts near Wenatchee are offering online classes and outreach programs to boost enrollment and avoid funding cuts.  KPQ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Washington Invasive Species Council has listed 18 invasive animals threatening the local ecosystem, urging communities to take steps to protect native species (the list highlights animals seen statewide). Local efforts may intensify as residents monitor nonnative species for harmful impacts.  KPQ
  • The U.S. Forest Service warns visitors to Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest about avalanches, thin ice & falling trees during winter. Experts advise people to check weather and avalanche forecasts and remain cautious as obstacles and fallen trees continue to affect trails until spring.  KPQ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Department of Natural Resources is hosting public listening sessions on wildfire hazard mapping, risk assessment and emergency planning to guide new maps for wildfire preparedness. In Wenatchee, the session is set for Wednesday, Feb. 4 at 6 p.m. (other sessions will be held in Roslyn and Winthrop).  KPQ
  • Representative Alex Ybarra of Quincy introduced House Bill 2006 to extend deadlines for Chelan and Douglas counties to designate industrial land banks under the Growth Management Act + protecting the environment, while counties update long-term plans. A public hearing was held Tuesday and the bill now awaits a committee vote.  KPQ
