- ➤ WSU broke ground on an $18 million plant research facility at its Tree Fruit Research and Extension Center in Wenatchee in April; it will replace 70-year-old greenhouses with controlled spaces when it opens summer 2027. The project is funded by a $10 million state allocation and $1.7 million from industry. KPQ
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Washington’s Department of Ecology declared a statewide emergency drought after a mild winter yielded only 52% of normal water supplies. The declaration enables up to $3 million in emergency grants — governor Bob Ferguson said the measure will help fish, farmers and communities prepare for a challenging summer. KPQ

- ➤ Residents in Chelan County can file tax returns until May 1, 2026 (a 15-day extension) instead of the April 15 deadline due to December flooding. The IRS will apply the extension automatically based on local zip codes. KPQ
