COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Serve Wenatchee is holding its annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive on May 10 and is looking for volunteers to help unload, weigh, and sort food donations + volunteers must be able to lift 30 pounds during this active outdoor event that supports local food pantries and Fresh Hope Market.  KPQ

CRIME NEWS

  • Police in Grant County arrested 43-year-old Jason Robert Besel near Quincy on suspicion of manufacturing drugs in a lab discovered on April 21 (the search uncovered labs for methamphetamine and DMT production, a psilocybin mushroom grow, explosive manufacturing materials including an inert grenade, and 29 firearms).  KPQ

CULTURE NEWS

  • WVMCC and the City of Wenatchee Historic Preservation Board will lead a self-guided tour of six historic sites—including the Wetherald Home, Vradenburg Apartments, and Home of Peace Mausoleum—on May 31 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Visitors must register and pay $30, with a special $10 reception offered for WVMCC members.  KPQ

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Washington State Legislature approved a new gas tax that will add 6 cents per gallon beginning in July — local drivers might pay almost an extra dollar each time they fill a 16-gallon tank.  KPQ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Manson School District approved a four-day school week for the 2025-2026 school year after Monday’s board meeting and now awaits OSPI approval to make the change official. The new schedule will run from 8:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. with extra instruction time (saving about 3 percent or up to $375,000 in costs) and added Friday activities (including monthly teacher training and student programs).  KPQ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Ferguson signed a law that will ban elephants, bears, wild cats and nonhuman primates from performing in traveling circuses in Washington starting in July. Violators will face a gross misdemeanor with fines up to $5,000 and jail time of up to 364 days.  KPQ

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • The U.S. Forest Service said campgrounds in the National Forest are reopening for the season, including Fox Creek Campground (27 miles from Highway 97A with 16 sites) and Pine Flats Campground (13 miles from the junction with 6 sites); both charge $15 per night and do not offer drinking water.  KPQ
  • Lonely Planet ranked Lake Chelan and Lake Washington among America’s top lakes & praised their scenic mountain views and wide range of summer activities. The rankings highlight that these Washington lakes stand out against other well-known lake destinations.  KPQ
  • Mabel Hoffman, who turned 105, said it is just a number as she looks forward to more days and recalls many changes from her long life. She continues to live with strength and a positive heart.  The Wenatchee World
