CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Five towns in North Central Washington show unique naming stories that reflect rich historical roots. Quincy was named for an Illinois city, Leavenworth for a railroad promoter, Peshastin has Native American origins, Wenatchee honors a local river name, and Ephrata was renamed after its orchards — each story dates back to the 1800s. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ More than 1.5 million residents statewide will join the Great ShakeOut earthquake drill on October 16th at 10:16 a.m. as emergency alerts on radio, TV, and NOAA Weather Radio test preparedness (coastal tsunami sirens will also be activated while participants practice dropping, covering, and holding on). - ➤ Thick smoke from Lower Sugarloaf and Labor Mountain wildfires reduced sunlight for apple harvest in Wenatchee Valley this fall — growers say the lack of sun makes it hard to ripen apples. The Wenatchee World
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Governor Bob Ferguson met with Wenatchee tree-fruit growers at City Hall on Saturday to discuss how tariffs and rising H-2A labor costs are affecting the industry — farmers said tariffs have not hurt them as much as other sectors but are feeling the pinch from increased labor expenses. Local officials, including State Senator Keith Goehner and State Representative Tom Dent, joined the discussion to help seek solutions. KPQ

- ➤ Touch of Soul has opened a brick-and-mortar restaurant at 212 S Wenatchee Ave that serves authentic Cajun and Creole dishes like jambalaya and crawfish étouffée+ Founder Kenneth Brown from New Iberia uses family recipes to bring traditional flavors to Wenatchee, and the eatery operates Wednesday through Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. until Club Kaos takes over at 9:00 p.m. KPQ

- ➤ Dave Rayfield from the Wenatchee Wild is camping on the Town Toyota Center balcony until 1,000 tickets are sold for a veterans support game on November 8. The fundraiser will provide $4,000 for the Wenatchee Veterans Hall and the Thomas A. Biddle Foundation while already raising a total of $24,000. KPQ
